RC Certification for Professionals

IF YOU ARE an experienced consultant, coach or change agent who wants to use relational coordination for positive organizational change, we invite you to become RC certified.  The certification process prepares and certifies individuals to use relational coordination principles and metrics to help organizations achieve positive change. Unlike certification programs that offer a certificate for attending a course, this program consists of a rigorous peer review of two change projects.

RC Certified Professionals have a common set of skills and come from two kinds of backgrounds - some are trained primarily in organizational development and process consultation while others are trained primarily in work process improvement methods.  These two backgrounds bring complementary skills for successful RC interventions, as illustrated by the interaction between relational and work process interventions in the Relational Model of Organizational Change

RC Certification is governed by the RCRC Board and its Training and Certification Committee, staffed by Marjorie Godfrey (Dartmouth Institute, Microsystem Academy), Nancy Whitelaw (Salus Global), Tony Suchman (University of Rochester School of Medicine, Relationship Centered Health Care), Diane Rawlins (InsideOut Consulting, LLC), Ken Milne (KENEIR Corporation, Western University, Salus Global) and Claus Jebsen (Institute for Co-Creative Leadership Norway).

RC Certification Criteria

1. Carry out two change projects using relational coordination principles and metrics. One project must have baseline and follow up RC Survey results.  The other project must have baseline results and a plan for carrying out the change process and assessing its impact.

2. Demonstrate through written report and oral review a clear understanding of Relational Coordination Theory and its application to the design and implementation of two projects:

  • Understand the context
  • Identify performance outcomes of interest to the client
  • Identify the work process that drives those performance outcomes, and the work groups involved in that work process
  • Engage those work groups in RC measurement
  • Feed back survey results to prompt reflection and learning
  • Plan and conduct interventions informed by the survey results to improve relational coordination and associated performance outcomes
  • Assess impact of intervention on RC and performance outcomes

Steps in the Certification Process

  1. Read about and become familiar with relational coordination through the RCRC website. Attend RC Intervention Training, RCRC webinars, the RC Cafe, and more, at your discretion.


  2. Carry out your change projects informed by the RC Survey. 
  3. Submit written reports.
  4. Engage in oral review process with feedback from two colleagues who are RC Certified Professionals.
  5. Achieve RC Certification.
  6. Engage in ongoing knowledge sharing through the RCRC community of practice.
  7. Seek Re-Certification within 5 years to maintain standing.

Benefits of RC Certification

  1. Use of RC Certified Professionals trademarked logo.
  2. Inclusion of your name, organization, expertise and contact information on RC Certified Professionals referral list.
  3. Eligibility to submit your training program to become an RC Certified Training.
  4. All RC certified professionals are eligible to act as faculty reviewers.  For information about faculty stipends, contact info@relationalcoordination.org.

Fees

To participate in certification program: $2500
Recertification (after 5 years): $1000

Note that the cost of the RC Survey is not included in the certification fees. Please contact RC Analytics to access the RC Survey and wraparound support.

Eligibility

Certification is intended for experienced consultants, coaches and change agents. Individuals who do not have sufficient training and experience as outlined below, may not be able to fulfill the credentialing criteria. To self-assess your readiness, please consider the following guidelines:

1. A minimum of one year of hands-on consulting experience, including longitudinal interventions.

2. Education and/or training in group work, which can take a variety of forms:

  • An advanced degree in organizational development, organizational psychology, organizational change or a related discipline; or
  • A non-degree certification program in facilitation and group dynamics; or
  • Courses specific to group dynamics, improvement, etc.; or
  • Extensive on-the-job training.
